Description

A U.S. Marshall tracking a vicious murderer through the Antarctic must locate the killer before the sun sets for six months, or risk being trapped in the dark with the madman for months on end in director Dominic Sena's adaptation of the graphic novel series by Greg Rucka. U.S. Marshall Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale - UNDERWORLD) has been stationed at Antarctica's South Pole research base for two years, and now after turning in her resignation she's looking forward to finally going home. The last plane out leaves in just three days, and just after that Antarctica will not see the sun again for another 24 weeks. Then, just 72 hours before she is set to escape the coming darkness, a body is discovered in the ice -- prompting the first murder investigation ever to take place on the desolate Antarctic Circle continent.

Little does Carrie realize that she's suddenly been thrust into a mystery over 60 years in the making, and that the killer is ready to strike again in order to protect a grim secret. Now, as the death toll starts to rise, loyalties shift, and a massive series of whiteouts blow bitter winds across the frozen landscape, the U.S. Marshall who wanted nothing more than to escape the cold must work around the clock to catch a killer before the blinding white snow gives way to the deadly darkness of winter.

The premise sounds good... the first murder on the continent of Antartica. The film gets off to an interesting start too despite some completely unnecessary flashes of flesh in the first few scenes. The story is that Carrie Stetko is a US Marshal posted to a research station in Antartica, but when a body is discovered in the frozen wasteland she must investigate. As if the first murder on the continent isn't enough to deal with there is a snowstorm moving in meaning an early evacuation of the research station. Can she track down the killer in time.

Reading reviews online you could be mistaken for thinking this is a terrible movie, it isn't. It's in that no-man's land between good and bad, the middle of the road is a dangerous place to be. In fact that could be this films whole problem. The movie never really flows and the tension never quite racks up enough to be a true thriller. There's plenty of dangers with the ice and cold, and these are emphasised with the main character loosing two fingers after her first run in with the killer.

Strangely though I can imagine this working better as it's original graphic novel. However in the real world things don't work like Graphic Novels. Carrie goes out without any protection to her face apart from a hat perched on her head, or a Parka jacket and comes inside again with no evidence of the cold whatsoever, yet this weather can freeze a spilt hot cuppa in seconds! One would have thought that this film could have been the perfect product placement opportunity for Chapstick, but the chaarcters don't seem to suffer that despite the biting cold!

There are plot twists, unfortunately you can see them coming from miles away. There is action but it's often lost in the weather and the tension never quite gets past something you might get in CSI. The case itself is not confusing but the editing is a little. Having said all that it's still watchable and although there are these errors it can be mildly entertaining. I think this is a rental for a quiet night in when there really is nothing else to do I'm afraid!
